World's oldest man dies in Montana

Walter Breuning, who age 114 was considered the world's oldest man, has died in the US state of Montana, dpa reported.

The retired railroad worker, who was among a small group of people to live in three centuries, died Thursday in a hospital in the city of Great Falls, the Great Falls Tribune reported.

Breuning, who was just five months short of his 115th birthday, was considered by the Los Angeles-based Gerontology Research Group to be the second-oldest living person in the world, and the oldest living man. He was 26 days younger than Besse Cooper of Georgia who is listed as the world's oldest person.

Breuning was born in 1896 in Melrose, Minnesota, but had lived in Great Falls since 1918. During the last several decades, he had lived at a home for seniors.

He had been hospitalized for some two weeks with an undisclosed illness but retained his mental faculties until the end, meeting with his attorney in the hours before his death to finalize his affairs, the report said.

Breuning also met with his pastor, who told the paper of an agreement Breuning said he had reached with god: "If I'm not going to get better, I'm supposed to go now."
