Date of Turkish Armed Forces Commander’s visit to Azerbaijan determined

Commander of the Turkish Armed Forces, General Isik Kosaner will visit Azerbaijan on Feb.16, a military source told Trend.

During the visit Kosaner will hold meetings in the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry and other agencies. Within the visit the state of the military cooperation between Azerbaijan and Turkey, as well as its perspectives will be discussed.

There is an agreement on bilateral military cooperation between Azerbaijan and Turkey.

Washington urges 'restraint' over protests in Algeria

The United States called on the Algerian authorities on Sunday to respect human rights and show restraint amid anti-government protests, the State Department spokesman said in a statement, RIA Novosti reported.

"We note the ongoing protests in Algeria, and call for restraint on the part of the security services," Philip Crowley said.

"We reaffirm our support for the universal rights of the Algerian people, including assembly and expression," he said adding: "These rights must be respected."

There are problems with enforcement of judicial decisions in Azerbaijan, Deputy Head of the Parliamentary Apparatus' Department for Legislation on State Building Latif Huseynov said.

He said 19 out of 45 decisions adopted by the European Court against Azerbaijan relate to a violation of the courts decisions' provided in Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.

Turkmen president backs Iran’s right to nuclear energy

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow has said that he acknowledges Iran's right to nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, MEHRNews reported.

The president made the remarks in Ashgabat on Tuesday at a meeting with Hamid Baqaii, the special advisor to President Ahmadinejad in international affairs.

Berdimuhamedow stated that he always emphasize Iran's right to a peaceful use of nuclear technology at his meeting with foreign officials.

He also called Iran the "best" neighbor of Turkmenistan.

Baqaii also said that Tehran is eager to promote cooperation with Ashgabat in various areas, including scientific and cultural areas.

EU's Ashton praises Southern Sudan vote as "historic moment"

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton on Monday hailed the independence referendum in Southern Sudan as a "historic moment", dpa reported.

Despite many obstacles, the vote had been "peaceful and credible," she said.

"The EU looks forward to further developing a close and long-term partnership with Southern Sudan," she continued.

Earlier Monday the results of a January referendum showed that an overwhelming 98.83 per cent of voters had voted in favour of independence from the north.

Tunisian interior minister suspends former ruling party

Tunisia's Interior Minister Farhat Rajhi on Sunday suspended the country's former ruling Constitutional Democratic Rally (RCD) party, Xinhua reported.

In a statement read out on Tunisian television, Rajhi said that the RCD was suspended from all political activities and that all of its offices would be shut down, the first step towards the dissolution of the party by judicial authorities. 

The initiative was taken as violence erupted in the southern town of Sidi Bouzid and in El Kef, some 200 km northwest of the capital during the weekend, which killed six people. In both towns, police stations were set ablaze

IISS report: Iran could have nuclear weapon in two years

Iran could develop a nuclear weapon within two years, but the time span could be shorter if untested uranium enrichment methods were used, a report published by the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) said Thursday, dpa reported.

"The totality of the evidence indicates beyond reasonable doubt that Iran also seeks a capability to produce nuclear weapons should its leaders choose to take this momentous step," said the strategic dossier on Iran's Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Capabilities.

Under the most likely scenario worked out by experts, it would take Tehran over two years to make a single atomic bomb, said the IISS.

However, one of the scenarios mapped out in its assessment showed that Iranian scientists would be able to produce enough weapons-grade enriched uranium for a weapon in just four weeks.
