EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton on Monday hailed the independence referendum in Southern Sudan as a "historic moment", dpa reported.
Despite many obstacles, the vote had been "peaceful and credible," she said.
"The EU looks forward to further developing a close and long-term partnership with Southern Sudan," she continued.
Earlier Monday the results of a January referendum showed that an overwhelming 98.83 per cent of voters had voted in favour of independence from the north.
