Five people convicted of drug trafficking and smuggling were executed by hanging. The sentence was executed in prison of the city of Horamabad in the west of the country,state news agency İRNA reported.
Law enforcement agencies of Iran executed nine people in 2010. In 2008, 246 people were sentenced to death and more than 270 defendants - in 2009. Tehran said that punishment through the death sentence is necessary to preserve public order and used only after extensive litigation.
