US will oppose bringing Israeli-Palestinian conflict before UN body

The United States said Wednesday it will oppose any resolution brought before the United Nations Security Council that calls on Israel to end settlement activity in the West Bank.

The Palestinians plan to submit the proposal early next year, chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat told the German Press Agency dpa. He denied earlier news reports that the Palestinians planned to call for the top UN body to recognize Palestinian statehood.

State Department spokesman Mark Toner said the United States continued to oppose Israeli settlement activity, but also opposed bringing elements of the Middle East peace process before the 15-member UN Security Council.

"These kinds of efforts don't move us any closer to our goal" of a two-state solution to the Middle East conflict, Toner said.

The United States has tried in vain to convince Israel to end settlement activity, prompting month-long direct peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians to collapse on October 2.

The Palestinians have threatened to use "other diplomatic options" than direct negotiations to achieve their goals, unless Israel accepts a full settlement freeze. Those options could include a bid for statehood recognition by the UN and individual countries some time next year.

A small handful of countries have already recognized Palestinian statehood in recent months.
