'Signing of the agreement will serve the development of the two countries.'

Creation of the Georgian-Azerbaijani Confederation contributes to regional security, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia Nino Kalandadze told reporters today after the session of the Georgian government.

During the visit of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to Georgia, his Georgian counterpart Mikheil Saakashvili said creation of a confederation between Georgia and Azerbaijan is being considered

"The statement on the establishment of the federation has been made, and technically of Georgia's consent on this issue has already been attained. The form of this initiative depends on the negotiations of diplomats, this is the subject of diplomatic work”, said Kalandadze.

She stressed that "at this stage the talks are about the legal frameworks for continuation of negotiations on different subjects. "The issue is being discussed at a superficial level," noted the deputy minister.

Meanwhile, Kalandadze noted that the signing of the agreement will serve the development of the two countries. "Within the framework of the Confederation we could outline a plan of development of our relations, which contributes to the development of the region, especially that the economic cooperation between our countries is very intense and profound," she said.

"Georgia welcomes the formation of a confederative relationship between Baku and Tbilisi," said the spokesman for the Georgian Foreign Ministry.
