Azerbaijan against escalation of tension over Iran

Azerbaijan hopes that any future action on Iran will avoid exacerbating tension in the region, a senior ruling party official has said.

'Resolution of the Iranian problem in any way that may entail disastrous consequences and an escalation of tension is unacceptable to Azerbaijan,' the executive secretary of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party, Ali Ahmadov, told journalists on Saturday.

He was commenting, albeit indirectly, on the adoption of the UN Security Council resolution imposing fresh sanctions against Iran.

'As a peace-loving nation, Azerbaijan supports the resolution of problematic and contentious issues peacefully through negotiation. A solution to the Iranian problem by any other means is unacceptable to Azerbaijan,' Ahmadov said.

He said that Iran and Azerbaijan were not just neighbouring countries, but shared historical roots.

Ahmadov said he hoped common sense would prevail in further decisions on Iran.

The UN Security Council adopted a resolution imposing new sanctions on Iran over its refusal to cease its uranium enrichment activities on 9 June. The document was supported by 12 members of the Security Council, including Russia and China, while Turkey and Brazil voted against.

This is the fourth resolution adopted by the UN Security Council for Tehran's reluctance to comply with international demands regarding its nuclear program.
